Nick Gentry took a new and creative approach to recycled art. These pieces are painted on old 3.5″ floppies and VHS tapes. Gentry uses the holes in the VHS tapes and disks as part of the image such as the eyes of his subject. Starting at $80 these are actually really cheap and their cool factor is definitely up there.

There are tons of things you can do to decorate your bachelor pad, but even big ass TV’s and pool tables pale in comparison to a 10 point buck “trophy”. Now you can have the man points without the mess, the death, and generally creepy factor that comes from hanging something dead on your wall, thanks to the Giant Cardboard Taxidermy kit from Urban Outfitters. So if the whole going out and killing something for the sake of decoration isn’t your style, then this will suit you best. Some assembly is required but that will just add to your street cred.

This is going to be a different kind of post for AlphaMaven. We’re actually telling you not to buy the iPad ($499). Don’t be fooled by it’s larger shiny screen, this is just a glorified iPod Touch. Yes Apple did announce their own snappy Apple A4 processor, but before you whip out your credit card (in 59 days), think about what this really offers. The Pluses: It’s compact for a tablet, it has a 1024×768 resolution, and it’s fast. The Negatives: It really doesn’t bring anything new to the table, it lacks flash support for web browsing, and it (like the iPhone) can’t multitask. If you’re wondering what the big deal about multitasking is then consider this.. You wan’t to have your favorite streaming Internet radio station playing (Slacker) and your favorite instant messaging app running while you’re browsing casually. The iPad simply doesn’t allow you to do this.
The Verdict: This seems like something that was rushed, and for Apple that’s not usual. Our Thoughts are to wait for the iPhone 4.0 to be announced before putting out the cash for an iPad. Why? Apple just released their own powerful processor and you can be certain that it’s going to be destined for the iPhone. iPhone OS 4.0 will also probably include multitasking and will probably have a resolution bump. When this happens you will have an iPad that’s the size of an iPhone. Since iPhones have been released during the past three summers, you can expect iPhone 4.0 to be announced in the May/June timeframe.

Everyone should at least be a little curious how their IQ ranks with their peers, so why not unofficially find out by taking the Pocket IQ Test ($14) by Dynamo House. In the box there are 60 questions that are to be answered in 45 minutes and an easy to read grading scale that scores you against your age group. It’s probably somewhere between 70-130 (both extremes each count for 2.2% of the population).

V Australia has teamed up with fashion designer Steven Alan to create a limited edition travel bag, the “Perfect Travel Bag” to be exact. For this project, Steven Alan decided to travel to Australia for inspiration and that cool part is that its documented for people to follow. As Steven opens up his creative process and shares his vision he invites you to comment on his journey, share your stories of Australia and even submit your ideas. The bag has all the details covered form a dedicated pouch for wet items to an easily accessible slot that makes removing and inserting your laptop computer in airport security a breeze. Definitely a plus for us. There is no word yet on price or when it will be released but don’t worry we’ll keep you up to date.

Its always nice finding a product that serves dual purposes. Instead of leaving your controllers for your Xbox 360 and PS3 just laying around, why not have a stand that neatly houses AND charges them at the same time. Its a simple solution that functions and looks good. With the Power Pyramid from Konnet, you can charge up to two Xbox 360 controllers and two PS3 controllers at the same time. Or, if you just have one system, there is an option that can charge all of the same controller. It’s a bit steep in price but considering one controller is around the same price, its not so bad.

If you think you’re a hot sauce tough guy then put your money where your mouth is. The Waimea Bay Chili Pepper Company, based in Hawaii, grows USDA organic approved Naga Jolokias (Ghost Peppers). Ghost Peppers are simply the hottest pepper in the word. Period. They dwarf Habaneros by at least three times on the Scoville scale. For reference, Tobasco sauce rates in between 2,500-5,000 Scovilles. Law enforcement grade pepper spray rates in at about 5,000,000 Scovilles. A single Ghost Pepper rates between 15,000,000-16,000,000 (no we didn’t add extra 0’s) Scovilles. You would have a better time using pepper spray as Binaca than eating a single Ghost Pepper. Starting at two bucks why not give it a try?
