Ork Brain Poster

brain

The Chicago designer Jenny Beorkrem has added some new material to the mix with the brain poster. If this poster looks familiar, it’s because you may have seen some of her other typographically screen printed city map posters before, such as Los Angeles and New York City. These posters are definitely a cool way to rep where you’re from.

empty L.A.

emptyla4-660x395

If you’ve ever spent time in bumper to bumper traffic on the 405, you’ve definitely had the same thoughts as Matt Logue. The Los Angeles-based artist, photographer and animator, after working on the Lord of The Rings Trilogy in New Zealand, has created a visual-essay of sorts based on the premise of an LA without people. The thought of one of the world’s busiest/populated cities being a ghost town is definitely eerie, yet peaceful at the same. One picture that caught our eye was the play ground. The same play ground that was attached to our elementary school. Check out the rest of these awesome pics after the break.

Lensbaby Double Glass Optic

Lensbaby_DoubleGlass_Optic_20100319

Lensbaby has all sorts of trick lenses for your DSLR camera and one that stands out to us is their Double Glass Optic. This optical glass is multi coated to allow an incredibly sharp sweet spot for your subject while giving a minimum of diffusion at all aperture settings. You would use this optic to give you some of those artsy shots where the subject of the photo is very crisp and the edges seem to blur out slowly. Here are some examples shot with this optic: Here, Here, and Here.

Segmentus Clock by Art Lebedev Studio

Segmentus_Art_Lebedev_20100308

Art Lebedev Studios are one of our favorite tech designers because they always come up with great looking products that highlight the technology rather than mask it. As seen below, Segmentus works by having six sets of two individual legs for each numeral and they rotate to their position according to the current time. We also like the fact that the border surrounding each numeral is slightly translucent so you can sort of see what’s going on behind the scenes. The clock is a pretty large size coming in at 16.9″ wide by 7.3″ high. Our only issue with this clock is that we wish it could be mounted to the wall because it would make a great wall clock. Segmentus isn’t available yet, but we can imagine it won’t be cheap (probably in the $300-$500 range). That probably still won’t stop us because this is awesome.

FlexibleLove: Expandable Honeycomb Love Seat

FlexibleLove

Are you doing your part in the go green movement? The Flexible Love is not only cool,  its ecological, adaptable and practical. The Flexible Love chair is an expandable chair, designed by Chisen Chiu made entirely of recycled paper and recycled wood waste.  It is produced using a pre-existing manufacturing process in order to reduce their overall impact on the environment.

“The name “Flexible Love” was derived from the concept of a flexible “love-seat” – seating that could hold from one to as many as sixteen individuals; changing length and shape with a simple pull at each end. A honeycomb structure, used throughout the entire Flexible Love line, produces an accordion-like result that allows each piece to be extended and collapsed with ease.”

Nick Gentry Recycled Artwork

Nick_Gentry_Art_20100129.jpg

Nick Gentry took a new and creative approach to recycled art. These pieces are painted on old 3.5″ floppies and VHS tapes. Gentry uses the holes in the VHS tapes and disks as part of the image such as the eyes of his subject. Starting at $80 these are actually really cheap and their cool factor is definitely up there.

Shooting Star Interlocking Puzzle by Siam Mandalay

Shooting_Star_Siam_Mandalay_20100104

We like puzzles and brain teasers and it’s pretty rare to find one that looks good sitting on your desk. The Shooting Star($19) by Siam Mandalay is a great example of a functional desk decoration. Carved out of six identical wood pieces, this puzzle will have you frustrated for a good while before eventually figuring it out. If you do get too frustrated though, there is a solution available. Try not to peek though.

Canvasworks by Noto Fusai

1a

What we have here is truly a work of art that is both decorative and functional. “Canvasworks” is literally a collection of interior products: “canvas that works,” which designer duo Noto Fusai proudly introduce to you as a brand-new entity to fill the gap between art piece and functional products. What might seem like an ordinary work of art on canvas, is in actuality a functional clock like the pictures displayed above and below. Right now they have three designs which consist of a hanging real bulletin board, dresser with working clock and a wall outlet. We think that this is an awesome idea and we look forward to future pieces of work from this multi-talented duo.

The Neon Museum – Las Vegas

boneyardmuseum

We never thought we’d want to do anything else in Vegas besides…well we’ll just keep that between Vegas and us. Anyway, back to the point. Not far from the strip lies the quiet desert resting place of the city’s neon history. The Las Vegas Neon Museum and its Neon Boneyard are home to more than 150 signs collected for preservation so that we can enjoy the unique story about who created them, what inspired them, where and when they were made and how they were all a part of the development of Las Vegas and its rich history. The Boneyard itself  is “home to some of the most treasured and world-famous signs of Las Vegas—Caesars Palace, Binions Horsehoe, Golden Nugget, Silver Slipper, and, most recently the Stardust”. Hey, we wouldn’t mind a little history lesson about our favorite play ground, ever. Oh yeah, if you plan on visiting this place, they only accept advance appointments from Tuesday – Saturday as they often sell out.
